Carved

I’m in my 40s.  To be more accurate I’m the wrong end of my 40s. Not far from 50. It is what it is.

Do I come across as my age? Absolutely not, and that’s not just my view. Ok ok, I’m 48 but according to a lot of people I don’t look or act it.  I often find myself in one of those group “guess how old I am” chats.

Now in the workplace you can’t have those types of conversations apparently. Age is a “protected characteristic” (along with things like gender, religion, sexuality etc) but I get away with it by making it clear to all present that I won’t be offended regardless of what age they come out with and I mean that. There are plenty of ways I could be offended by the right people and that’s not one of them.

Anyway on average I get told I look about 10 years younger than I am and will I ever complain about that? Hell no! But I don’t live my life seeking that kind of validation.

In the interests of balance there are things I do which likely contributes to this perception from others.

Yep I’ve been physically active for just over 10 years.  For the first 5 of those I was a runner. 10ks, half marathons etc. I was never an athlete by any stretch of the  imagination but it kept me in decent shape as I was entering my 40s.

And for the last 5 years I’ve been lifting weights. I’m no Dwayne Johnson but I do have a pretty muscular physique for my age. So I’ve been told my physique makes me look younger.

And the other…..for most of my 40s (as well as my late 30s) I’ve been very grey. As I shave my head twice a week you don’t see any of it there but my beard is very “silver” (which I hate!) so I’ve been dying it since about 2015, one former work colleague even said “it takes years off of you”.

So on the back of that, “Just for Men (beard)” dye gets a lot of business from me!

Midlife crisis? I don’t know, maybe. All I know for certain is I like the way I look right now so why would I deliberately want to change it?
